my first time in glacier national park + tips to keep your road trip low budget

Updated: May 23, 2020

The first time I travelled outside of my home state of Minnesota without my family, was in July 2019. I went on a road trip to Montana with one of my closest friends, Ariana. We went to Glacier National Park and spent one week camping around the area. We had so much fun and never ran out of things to explore! The mountains make their appearance from quite a distance from the park, they are absolutely jaw dropping. Ariana and I were freaking out as soon as they were visible.

The first night we spent in the park, we found a parking lot to car camp in—since it was really late and neither of us felt like setting up our tent. We were also on an extreme budget, so we didn’t spend all kinds of money on accommodations or campsites! There are plenty of places that are a decent distance from the park to pitch a tent for free without having to pay for a campsite, if you are interested in giving this park a visit and are also looking for ways to keep it low-price! We found the cutest free campsite along the side of a bridge that had scrap wood available for fires. We also made a few friends at this campsite, they said they found the location using http://freecampsites.net/. Another thing we did to conserve our money was buying groceries beforehand. The only thing we paid for on this trip was the cost of gas and one week’s worth of groceries.

Some things I enjoyed the most on this trip was driving on the famous “going to the sun” road. Some of the most beautiful scenes I’ve ever seen was along that road. The hike up to Grinnell Glacier is also something that is worth putting on your Glacier National Park bucket list. Ariana and I hiked Grinnell Glacier with nothing but our cameras, thinking that we wouldn’t complete the whole hike. Lesson: Always bring water, no matter where you go! Two Medicine has some beautiful hiking views as well. Those are just a couple of the things I really enjoyed; we adventured many other spots around the park. Other things that are available to do are horseback riding and whitewater rafting—which we didn’t get the chance to try, but if you go, definitely give it a try if you’re interested! Overall, this is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to and highly recommend visiting! We had so much fun!

Here are a few pictures from that week:
